f(AI)th Through Facts

By Yliana Flores Vilella

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” – John 10:27

f(AI)thfully Connected

Late-night laughs with my mama group chat are my jam. I curl up under my blanket, phone in

hand, and launch off a million and one memes and reels while catching up on the day’s

messages. I love it. We share everything from marriage jokes and parenting tips to beauty

routines and self-care hacks. And somehow, between the chaos of overcaffeinated, under-rested

moms, we still dream about protein goals, cortisone levels, step counts, and finding balance in

our busy lives. Then I wonder about a deeper kind of beauty, one that does not come from

skincare routines but from purity and peace. And as a sports mom, my days are not exactly

peaceful.

One night, while scrolling aimlessly, I saw her, and I couldn’t keep scrolling. She glowed with a

light I lacked. Maybe it was the exhaustion talking, but her brightness felt real. It was like the

glow of a pure heart, pure joy and innocence, and… maybe a solid skincare routine and 10,000

daily steps. I locked in. I had scrolled upon an AI-generated video of the Virgin Mary! It was a

playful satire of what she might be like in today’s culture, smartphone in hand and modern lingo

and hilarious. I laughed until I cried and, of course, shared it with my mama chat. It was funny,

relatable, and the story seemed aligned with the Word as I knew it.

I was hooked! I followed that “creator” for more of this content. These AI satires made the

connection so well to today’s world that I almost forgot they weren’t real. Another day had come

and gone and there I was again, wrapped in the comfort of my bright orange Whataburger

blanket with the ceiling fan blasting (because Florida + perimenopause), and as my thumb

hovered over the share arrow on the bottom corner of a reel, I felt a pause come over me. It was a

quiet caution. That’s weird. It was “scripture” (kinda), it was funny, and my mama friends would

get a great laugh. What could be wrong? Except for one thing: discernment had entered the chat!

Don’t you love when that happens?! Honestly, I do. And it reminded me of the obvious… this is

not real. This isn’t truth in the way I know it, the way I’m called to know it. These skits may

reenact the Word, but they aren’t the Word. The characters aren’t real people; they’re artificially

designed. And in that moment, it felt like I got a gentle side-eye from the Holy Spirit.

Ouch. I didn’t send it.

That moment made me realize just how easy it is to blur the lines between entertainment and

truth… and a creator and The Creator. Social media is designed for quick glimpses of a false

reality. Not everything we see on social media is true, and the same goes for biblical content

designed to entertain or inspire. First Corinthians 14:33 reminds us, “For God is not a God of

disorder but of peace.” His Word doesn’t need to be changed to be powerful. When we let satiresstand in for Scripture, even in small innocent ways, confusion also enters the chat. That’s why discernment matters. God’s truth is steady, unchanging, and not AI- it is forever and for

everyone.

f(AI)thful to the Father’s Voice

God’s people know His voice, and that’s a fact (John 10:27). His presence is recognizable. We

know His kindness, His love, and even His redirection. And that night, I was redirected. We live

in a time where fact and deception can intertwine, and it’s easy to get confused and caught up.

But I chose to pause instead of repost and share, and that redirection reminded me how quickly

my “harmless” sharing could mislead others, even my best friends. Yikes!

As God’s children, His voice should be so familiar to us that our spirit instantly recognizes what

is genuine and rejects what is generated. In a world so connected and carefully crafted for social

media content, discernment should be the anchor. Because what we feed our spirits will

eventually consume us.f(AI)th Through Facts

Faith is about facts. AI is fake, it is in the name, but it is also a large part of today’s culture, and

can not be ignored. It can be a tool, but never the source. Laughter should never replace learning, just as scrolling should never replace Scripture. And as I learned, sometimes innocent humor can chip away at what’s real. As Proverbs 14:15 reminds us: “The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps.” And so, my mama chat goes back to counting steps, setting goals, swapping beauty tips, and laughing at memes. But the real takeaway? Don’t let the glow of social media outshine the beauty of truth. Stay grounded. Stay discerning. Because the most radiant “beauty routine” we could ever have is keeping our hearts tuned to the Father’s voice and letting His light shine through us.
